2British politician and leader of the Liberal Party (1976-1988). He became an MP in 1965 and five years later began serving as Liberal Chief Whip (1970-1975) before succeeding Jeremy Thorpe as Liberal Leader in 1976. He was the last leader of the party before it merged with the Social Democratic Party (to become the Liberal Democrat Party) in 1988.
